Starbucks & Saving Money

I am addicted to Starbucks! There I said it! A few of the barista know me by name when I go in, and I am a gold card holder! Do you realize what it took for me to get to gold card status? For every purchase you receive a star, you have to get 12 to get a free drink. With each level you go up, your 12 stars more, several levels until you finally reach gold. You get this great card with your name on it (really? That’s all I get? I was severely disappointed when I hit it!) Once you hit gold, they don’t bother to tell you that you have to maintain the purchasing of 30 within a year to keep your gold card status…oh my, what did I get myself into! So, as of the 2015 new year, I am trying to keep my purchases to once a month. (I think I am going to lose my gold card status for sure!) But its ok, because when I sat down and figured out how much was spent at Starbucks, I was shocked!

When you spend $2 each weekday buying something to drink? If you make the choice to bring your own cup of coffee/tea, thermos, water bottle or soda just one day a week, you will save $104/year. Do it every day and you are making the choice to save $10/week, $40/month and $520/year.

Compare those drinks to a Starbucks drink. When I spend $4.83 a day, if we do just one day a week, you will save $251.16/year. Do it every day and you are making the choice to save $24.15/week, $96.60/month and $1,159.20/year on a 5 day work week. If you went to Starbucks, every single day of the year, 365 days, you would have spent $1,762.95. That’s unbelievable! When we finally did the math, it was time to start making our own coffee at home!

Savings tip: Put the amount you save each day in a jar and watch your money grow!
